My grandmother, Marie Young is simply the best person I know. Not in my top five, not “one of the best”
; she is unequivocally, hands down, without a shadow of a doubt the.best.person.I.know. Seriously. I say that without any sense of hyperbole or creative Tokeya flair. I mean it from the core of who I am. I lived with my grandmother from the time I was a year old to when I moved out to get married. Unfortunately, my mother was not able to care for me and (thankfully) my grandmother was there to pick up the reins. And when I was three years old, she became my legal guardian. But since the very first day she took me in her care, she took me into her heart and (thankfully) hasn’t released me yet.
I LOVE MY GRANDMA!! Anyone who knows me, knows that my grandmother and I are bonafide bffs, true blue besties. She is my my all weather, by my side main amiga. I know that, no matter what, I can count on her to be there for me. Whether I am happy or sad, sick or well, she is right by my side feeding me love and positivity. She has always been my strongest cheering section, especially when I didn’t believe in myself. She has always been there with her own brand of coaching, whispering in my ear: you can do it!
Her own life hasn’t been easy, but the residue of whatever remains doesn’t show on her face or on her spirit. She is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. She will be 86 years old on July 4th is her birthday, but seriously looks much younger. She is a wonderful testament to the adage that "black don't crack." She is a feisty old lady with style, grace, class and poise. In fact, if I grow up to be half the woman that she is--well, let's just say that I will be something to behold. And she doesn’t just look younger, she is full of vibrant energy. She is enthusiastic and quite funny. In fact, we spend hours on the phone or sitting on my sofa laughing and enjoying each other’s company.
Truth be told, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that everyone in my family feels the same about my grandmother. Her presence in our lives is the ultimate proof that there is a higher power. We are blessed exponentially by just knowing her; we are aware of the beauty that she brings to our worlds. Not only did she raise me, she has raised several of my cousins in addition to rearing her own brood. And she has never made any of us feel as if we were burdens. She simply smiles and expands her heart to include a little more space for the next one and the next one and the…Her love is limitless.
My grandmother is our family matriarch, the keeper of our family history and a walking library of the Black experience. I’m glad that we spend so much time together because my children have the benefit of this loving elder who feeds their dreams with peppermints and kind words, who encourages their growth with her laughter and smiles. My grandmother loves my children and my husband as if she gave birth to them; in fact, she loves them like she loves me. And you know what? They love her back which is actually an understatement of the strength of the love that is reciprocated between all of us. It’s just like water and air—it simply is.
I LOVE MY GRANDMA and I want everyone to know that she has poured the best of herself into me -- a child who wasn't hers, but one she could not have loved more. I am grateful to my grandmother for giving me feathers for my first pair of wings. I am indebted to her for showing me that you can be a strong woman without being hard. I appreciate that she is charitable and continues to do for others. I am her namesake (the Cornell is from her), her pride and her granddaughter. I thank the Universe for blessing me with her and I am eternally grateful for her love.
