In the first 2 lines, she's saying that she loves the person the way he is and it's only natural that she likes him because that just how she is, she can't help it.
The line after that, "we always say" - means that they've always been honest about everything, but then halfway through the line she remembers that it's not the case anymore (since they're either not talking like they used to, or the person is already gone) so she alters it midway to the past tense, "said like it is"
that's why in the last line, upon realizing how they used to be, she admits that the past is what she missed.
that's how I see it. It's in the way she sings it, too. 🙂

Her and I are extremely alike, we call each other twins because we are that much alike. but we live 680 miles apart, and we only get to see each other a couple weeks through out the year. which is terrible. this song is like it was written for us. even if the song was written for someone that has passed away. the lyrics still work wonderful for us. WE LOVE IT!
